Reaching orbit over one of the many moons of the Ringworld, a nearly airless rock the size of our moon covered in rocky terrain and ice formations, the Captain and staff of the Bronze Voyager call Friend Anna to a special meeting. They want her to take one of the ships landers (I was thinking something like the Russian LK you see on Apollo 18) and fly down to explore a specific area on the surface-however they go into little detail on what she is actually to do down there. When Anna mentions her piloting experience is minimal, the head of the Science staff (who has some strange implants on the sides of his head that should be familiar to SS2 fans) assures her that the lander's computers would do most of the work and that she is the perfect person for the job. Going down into the hangar, she suits up and flies down to the surface coordinates they have given her, a rocky plain near some rock formations.

Following instructions she heads in the direction they give her only to come across a startling sight, the entrance to what seems to be a large facility built by someone not of their world! There is a large hangar bay whose doors have been blasted open by the plasma engines of the ship lying inside...Anna begins exploring and finds a number of bodies who lying around in the badly damaged and decompressed hangar and says "These people appear to be human!" in her conversations with her masters orbiting overhead. Exploring the ship, she finds a number of mysterious eggs lined up in the hold, but the Science officer assures her due to the freezing temperatures of the vacuum there that they are frozen solid and there is nothing to worry about (with a sinister remark about how bad and idea it is to handle them at room temperature!) Pressing forward she reaches the rear of the ship and sees a large machine with a flashing indicator saying "FTL offline" The science officer sees it through her helmet camera and almost hisses with pleasure "Friends we've hit the jackpot!" he says but tells Anna it's not her clearance level when she asks what it is (the mechanists are back engineering various pieces of equipment from other worlds they can get their hands on)

She goes back into the base hangar and exploring more, finds an airlock that appears to be active-but is instructed to go back outside-when she does she finds another lander parked in front of the hangar filled with equipment. Upon examination she finds she's been given several cultivators and mysterious looking keycards:

She ends up having to:

-Plant cultivators throughout the base to kill off the Many infestation with rust gas
-Use the keycards to access key computers that the science officer can use to gather data about the base
-recover various pieces of technology from the base

In the process she comes across various audio logs about what was going on there:

-The base had been there for nearly 10 years, it was primarily to explore the rich resources of that moon and send the occasional probe to observe the inner planets (avoiding the thief homeworld due to a prime directive type deal-but actually not wanting to risk running into germs they might not be able to treat adequately)

-Various personal logs about goings on at the base

-A record about one of their supply ships coming across a small Mechanist spaceship that was part of the Gen1 program and was lost due to an accident-they are shocked to find there is intelligent life in that system and that it is human, further there is mention of structural parts being in the vessel that originated on the RICKENBACKER!

(Which after the events in SS2 ended up being separated from the Von Braun and crashing in the southern islands on the Thief homeworld, a mechanist expedition found it frozen in the ice and began to explore the ship-however they thawed out several still surviving Many and pandemonium insures-which was finally stopped by General Otto, having escaped the craft-by discharging a cultivator in the crater the ship was in and vaporizing the Many as well as half the expedition team still in there. When the mechanists went back into the Rickenbacker armed to the teeth they found the Many and their victims turned to smoke-however in the chaos the head of the science team (now on the Bronze Voyager) was sized by a robot and ended up unconscious in a sealed surgical chamber-apparently stunned by a robot and implanted with R-grade cyber implants. After smashing the chamber and extracting him, it was found eventually he could access the ships computers and decipher much of it's technology-enabling the Mechanists to compress centuries of development in less than a decade)

-The base had picked up radio chatter from the 4th planet and realized how far the Mechanists had gotten in their technology-in the words on one member "they could come knocking at our door at any time". An OSA team with military equipment had been sent to monitor chatter and gather intelligence-however unfortunately they brought biological samples taken from the Von Braun for a side research project in an out of the way location which ended in predictable results.

After completing her tasks and riding the lander upper stage back to the Voyager, Anna finds her faith in the Order severely shaken for a number of reasons.

1. The refusal to warn her about what she might possibly find before sending her off.
2. The head of the science team showing no regard for her safety and putting her through insane risks even aggressive generals hadn't asked her to do as a soldier. Even Unit 73 in some ways paled in comparison to the guy-who for some reason called her 'insect' a couple of times...;)
3. The realization that much of the technology she had taken for granted as the Builder's blessing to the Mechanist Order had actually been back engineered from another civilization.
4. After finding a small chapel in the base and seeing a Bible open on the podium, she looks closer and reads several lines from the Psalms/Sermon on the Mount and realizes that some of the people in that base who possessed technology superior to the Order had a form of worship that had no resemblance to the teachings of Karras.

She keeps her feelings to herself and resolves to research the issue, starting by looking into Friend Keiths claims about Mechanist writings at their chapel back on the 4th planet where she will be stationed for a year when she gets back...
